Composer Forum


As a champion of new music, one of my greatest joys is working and collaborating with living composers. I maintain a passion for working with student composers and have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the Composition Department at the University of Chicago for many years. Professors Cliff Colnot and Augusta Read Thomas continue to invite me to work with their student composers on advanced orchestration and composition involving the harp. Even at the graduate level, books do not accurately convey the nuances of the harp. I work with students in classroom, one–on–one and group settings, communicating via email between sessions. I have also worked with students at California State University— Sacramento, Columbia College, DePaul University, Northwestern University and Southern Illinois University.

Established professional composers and arrangers communicate with me over the span of many, many years. These composers and arrangers consult with me before submitting competition pieces, commissions, or before a recording session. Often these exchanges are just a few emails, saving the composer from worry before a first rehearsal and saving the arranger precious minutes in the recording studio. I proofread harp parts before publication, clarifying the placement of pedal markings, pedal charts, fingerings, stems and beaming, clefs and contemporary symbols. I will also suggest solutions to challenging chromatic dilemmas, making every attempt to maintain the integrity of your composition.

Collaborating with me does not simply involve avant–garde or extended techniques, but rather addressing how your compositional style can be expressed within the fundamentals of the instrument. I am detail oriented and experienced. You will find my communication skills to be straightforward, clear and concise.
